Help
Zonory is an interval timer for iPhone that follows your heart rate. This page answers the questions that come up most often. If yours is missing, write to info@zonory.com.
Getting started
What are zones, and how does Zonory calculate them?
Zonory uses the Karvonen method: heart rate reserve = maximum heart rate − resting heart rate. Zone 1 starts at 50% of the reserve, zone 5 ends at 100%. With a maximum of 185 bpm and a resting rate of 65, Z2 is 137–148 bpm and Z4 is 161–172 bpm.
You can enter your values yourself. With your permission, Zonory fills them from Apple Health and keeps them up to date.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. Any sensor with the standard Bluetooth heart rate profile works. The Apple Watch is optional and runs through Zonory's own watch app.
What do the three phase modes mean?
Immediate: the phase ends after its duration. Until zone: it ends once the target is reached, but not before the minimum duration; after that, Zonory waits for your pulse. From zone: the phase waits for the target, then a countdown starts and runs to the end even if your pulse leaves the zone.
What is the fitness level for?
Zonory estimates it from your profile and recent workouts and uses it to suggest plans. You can change the suggestion in the editor.
Sensors
Which sensors work?
Chest straps and armbands with the standard Bluetooth heart rate profile, and watches or bands that can broadcast their heart rate. Examples: Polar, Garmin, Wahoo, Coros and Suunto, WHOOP, newer Fitbits and Pixel Watch 2 or newer.
Oura rings do not broadcast heart rate. Older Fitbits do not either.
My sensor doesn't show up.
Start the sensor's broadcast mode first; some devices only advertise while it is active. Do not pair the sensor in the iOS Bluetooth settings — Zonory connects to it directly.
Many sensors accept only one connection. If a strap is connected to a watch or an app such as Zwift, disconnect it there. Zonory shows “sensor not found” after 15 seconds when nothing advertises the heart rate service.
Can I use my Oura ring?
No. Oura does not broadcast heart rate over Bluetooth, and Zonory does not read live heart rate from Apple Health. For intervals, use a chest strap or an armband.
Can I use more than one sensor at a time?
No. Zonory connects to one sensor at a time.
Training
Does Zonory work with the screen locked?
Yes. Zonory keeps running in the background, plays voice cues and sounds, and updates the Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
Why did a workout disappear?
Trainings with less than 30 seconds of active time (without pauses) are discarded: no Health workout, no history entry and no summary.
What happens when the signal drops?
Zonory keeps the phase running and shows that the signal is lost. In “Until zone”, the phase can end after the minimum duration with the reason “signal loss”. When the sensor returns, Zonory reconnects and continues.
Can I pause?
Yes. Pause stops the phase clock. Resume continues from the same point; the workout stays one session in Health.
Why is the countdown tone sometimes interrupted?
The 3-2-1 tones follow the target: they start once your pulse is stable in the zone and stop when it leaves. For phases with a fixed end, the spoken “zone end countdown” announces the remaining time instead.
Apple Watch
How does the Apple Watch work as a pulse source?
Start the training on the iPhone and choose Apple Watch. Zonory opens its watch app, the watch runs the workout session, records it and saves it to Health. The iPhone shows the same training and stays in sync.
Why is the iPhone silent during a watch workout?
The watch plays the cues and haptics. Without its own workout session, the iPhone cannot play audio reliably in the background, so it stays quiet.
The watch isn't reachable.
Unlock the watch and keep it near the iPhone. Zonory waits up to 10 seconds at the start; after that it cancels the start instead of running without a pulse.
Which device saves the workout?
The watch, when it is the pulse source. The iPhone does not open a second workout session, because that would end the mirrored session.
Health and data
What does Zonory write to Health?
One workout per training with heart rate and active energy — only when you tap Save in the summary. Demo trainings are never saved.
What does Zonory read from Health?
Your age, sex, weight, resting heart rate and recent workouts, to calculate your zones and fitness level. Zonory does not read live heart rate from Health to control a training.
How do I move to a new iPhone?
Plans, history, profile and settings are part of your iCloud or computer backup. Restore the backup on the new iPhone. There is no Zonory account and no cloud sync.
How do I delete my data?
Settings → Data → Reset app deletes plans, history, profile, settings and the remembered sensor on this iPhone. Deleting the app removes the same local data. Workouts already saved in Apple Health stay there and can be deleted in the Health app.
Does Zonory collect anything?
No. There is no account, no server, no analytics and no advertising. Read the privacy policy.
Troubleshooting
The pulse is wrong or jumps.
Optical wrist sensors react slowly to fast changes and struggle with motion. For intervals, a chest strap is more accurate. Moisten the strap before starting.
Bluetooth was switched off during training.
Zonory ends the connection and reconnects when Bluetooth returns. The training continues; a signal loss is recorded until values arrive again.
My training was too short to save.
Trainings under 30 seconds of active time are discarded by design, so a mistaken start does not leave an empty workout in Fitness.
